The Uppsala trail started as an Idea from Wendy Weygandt that read Kjell Eriksson.
Not a pure NNL detective writer but still in the outskirts of the genre. He mixes a little this and that.
Like we did with Mons Kallentoft's trails in Februari we decided to get another combined trail. Wendy read it, I walked it. And I had to admit I have read it after the trail. And So do I with Mons Kallentoft as well.
The problem was that there were very few Uppsala locations mentioned in the novel Open Grave. And some of his stories take part in Roslagen.
So I turned to the Sundsvall writer Jonas Moström who also had written about Uppsala as well. His Sundsvall detective gets caught up in a mess in Uppsala. Moström, who holds a Medical Doctor job as a day job, is originally from Uppsala. So of course there is a MD in the story even here.
Both writers capture Uppsala in different ways. Eriksson focuses on the academics and their prestigious life in the area west of the Uppsala castle. Where much of the University is placed. There is mostly envy, frustration and anger. Not so many locations.
Moström on the other hand is very specific. The story starts with a meal at Iberico.
A car chase takes us thought a great part of what is to be seen in Uppsala. On the map I just draw a general direction. Not street by street. Mostly to be easier to follow both on the map and in real life as a trailer.
Outside the Academic hospital of Uppsala Moströms story starts after a lunch downtown at Iberico restaurant by Fyrisån. Fyrisån is also where one murder hapends almost in the eyes of the cops.
The initial killing outside the Academic Hospital in Uppsala leads to a car chase through the famous parts of the city. The castle, Rediviva and the Obelisk at the Cathedral.
Uppsala downtown is surprisingly small compared to the size of the city and municipality.

The hight speed sightseeing then ends .....but don´t tell where.
The Uppsala region has always been an important region of Sweden. But a bit anonymous in the crime literature. Ärliga blå ögon, A Swedish tv series in the seventies about a woman that lived a double life. Turning tricks on criminals had its base in Uppsala.
Leif GW Perssons oskyldigt dömd, tv series had its base in Uppsala. Both series also have parts of the plot in Stockholm. Which is Uppsalas misfortune. The closeness to Stockholm.
How to get to Uppsala. One hours commuter train ride from Stockholm. Then you can walk to all the places I post here. And it is a beautiful walk. The area round the Cathedral is the best.
